2109 HOUSE ADDITION

Alexandria, VA

Size 400 SF
Cost $150,000
As per Hollin Hills official website www.hollin-hills.org “Hollin Hills was the first community in the Washington, DC Metro area to be made up entirely of contemporary homes. The 326-acre tract was developed by Robert Davenport and the Rodman brothers. Renowned architect Charles Goodman was chosen to design this visionary mid-century modern subdivision.”

The goal of this house addition was to add an upgraded Master Bedroom Suite on the Second Floor due to family new requirements.  Expansion of storage facilities on the Ground Floor also proved to be meaningful as an added benefit, given new load bearing walls/structure required for the second floor addition.  This addition added about 400 SF.  Among newly designed components in the new addition are Master Bedroom, with full bathroom, toilet, walk-in closet, study, balcony on the Second Floor, and on the Ground Floor new storage shed, plus expansion of existing shed.  Materials used are consistent with typical Hollin Hills style, – mid-century modern enclave in Alexandria, VA.  Design components such as floor to ceiling windows, orthogonal planes/shapes, including flat roofs were adopted by the new addition.  Some unique to Hollin Hills elements, such as stainless steel privacy screen, was also included in the design.  This is second addition to the house.  Original house designed by Charles Goodman was built in 1968.  First addition was designed by Tom Kerns and completed in 1979.
This house, originally built in 1968, is one of 458 houses known as Hollin Hills.  Recognized for its architectural and design vision, Hollin Hills was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013, and is a Virginia Landmark Historic District.  One of the main design goals was to maintain the general character of Hollin Hills.  Design components such as floor to ceiling windows, orthogonal planes/shapes, including flat roofs were adopted by the new addition.
